Sensors: Functional Inks

Functional Ink Options

Printed sensors comprise a functional ink printed on a flexible substrate. The functional inks create traces and contact pads which conduct the flow of electricity.

  • silver inks provide conductivity and are used to print most of a sensor's circuit
  • silver-chloride inks can interact with the properties of the skin, making them prevalent in biosensors
  • carbon inks can be used standalone, but they are more often used to overprint silver-ink traces to prevent oxidation and lessen resistance
  • dielectric inks are able to transmit electric force without conduction, prevent oxidation, and coat exposed conductive traces
