Design Success

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Cubbison Company achieved design and manufacturing success with a membrane switch for AmSafe Aviation-Phoenix, Az.

AmSafe is the world's leading provider of safety restraint products for the aerospace, defense, specialty and vehicle industries and they recently received FAA approval on the first and only seatbelt airbag system for use on commercial flights.  In the event of a survivable accident, an inflatable bag stored in the lap belt portion of the seatbelt protects passengers of all sizes from traumatic head and neck injury.

Each passenger will have an airbag installed in their seatbelt with a diagnostic module located underneath their seat. The airbag will not deploy accidentally during normal operations such as hard landing, random vibration, or food cart strikes on the seat. Deployment will occur; however, when a force is at or above 9g's for approximately 50 milliseconds.

Cubbison's membrane switch is located on the EMA (Electronic Module Assembly) and is the power and signal input control on the diagnostic module for the airbags. The EMA contains the system electronics, crash sensors, and an advanced lithium battery. All maintenance procedures and diagnostics are performed by pushing the test button on the EMA or by using the wireless software from AmSafe. RFID will then be used to communicate with the EMA module.

Cubbison's relationship with AmSafe Aviation began about 2 years ago.  Our design team, led by printed electronics engineer, Yvonne Smith spent countless hours designing the membrane switch for AmSafe Aviation's seat belt airbag system. Yvonne really enjoyed working on this project.  She said," Working with Peter Settles and the rest of the AmSafe team during the design phase was truly an honor, as well as a great learning experience."  The Cubbison team is excited about this collaborative relationship with AmSafe Aviation.

Cubbison Success

The printed electronics engineering team at Cubbison met a strict deadline and achieved design and manufacturing success with a membrane switch for WELkins LLC--- Roseville, CA.

WElkins LLC received FDA approval for their EMT/ICU Temperature Management System in August, 2012-a major milestone for any company, and one made even more rewarding by the relative rapidity of approval, less than 90 days after the company's submission to FDA. According to Maurice Jordan, Welkin's Director of Quality & Manufacturing, "Getting FDA approval in a 90-day time frame is very tough not to mention time consuming. Thank you very much for your support and belief in us as a company."

Cubbison's membrane switch is the HMI interface on the control panel of a portable, noninvasive cooling device, known as the EMT System, developed by WElkins LLC.  The EMT System is a lightweight, rugged cooling system that enables therapeutic hypothermia in the field, at the point of injury. Mild hypothermia is a potent neuroprotectant and its use in the pre-hospital setting can be crucial to patient survival and recovery.

WElkins' cooling technology is the product of over five decades' research and development by Bill Elkins, a father of the modern spacesuit and designer of microenvironment cooling garments to help NASA astronauts survive in space.  In 2004, Welkins LLC was formed to expand Elkins' research in liquid cooling technology for medical, military, industrial and athletic applications.  Cubbison's relationship with WElkin's started about 2 years ago when our design team, headed by Yvonne Smith, began developing their membrane switch.  Hours were spent engineering WElkin's unique design.  Cubbison worked closely with the WElkin's team to ensure everything was on track to meet their deadline.

Most membrane switch manufacturing companies want exact drawings from the customer and they quote the project as is, offering little to no assistance in the area of design.  At Cubbison, we think design assistance is our niche.  We take the time to research each project and our electronic engineers work together to offer the best design solution and finished product.

Cubbison Company is excited about collaborative relationship with WElkins LLC and is honored to work with such an innovative company!

Cubbison's Touch Screen Technology

Friday, September 2, 2011

Touch screens are widely used on a daily basis; on your cell phone, while your checking out at the grocery store, renting a movie at the kiosk, or even at the gas station.Touch screens are a convenient technology we encounter every day.

The first touch screen was a capacitive touch screen developed by E.A. Johnson at the Royal Radar Establishment in Malvern, UK around 1965. From their beginning, touch screens have come a long way and  are now used by many OEM's for their interface solutions. Check out the various types of touch screens on our website by clicking the following link /products/touch-screens.aspx.

Two of the most common touch screens are the resistive and the capacitive technologies.  See the chart below to better understand the differences between the two technologies.

Customer Service and Cubbison

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

With the New Year approaching I wanted to start out Cubbison's Blog with a quote from Henry Ford,"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress." "Working together is success." Here at Cubbison we are a team and as a team we will go above and beyond to satisfy our customers.

A team member of Cubbison recently went above and beyond for a prospective customer who needed a rush on an order right before the holiday. The Monday on the week before Christmas this team member received a quote request from a new customer for metal nameplates that needed to be rushed. The customer needed this order by the Tuesday of the week of Christmas.  This was a new customer so artwork and paperwork needed to have approval. This Cubbison team member knowing production had their hands full because of the short work week and a lot of orders to produce before the holiday break went to the plant manager to see how Cubbison can make this order happen.  Instead of pushing it aside until after the holidays, she took ownership and went above and beyond for this customer to make sure the order was delivered on time. Cubbison had this order delivered on Monday, one day before it was scheduled and needed to be delivered.

The art team, production, and the Cubbison Team worked together to make it a Win/Win situation. Cubbison gained the TRUST of a new customer and that customer will continue to work with us because of our efforts.  This is just one of the many examples how Cubbison demonstrates great customer service and use of our multi-functional teams.

Continue to check out our monthly blog.  We have a lot of new and exciting topics coming up this year!

Trade Shows & Events

Monday, March 16, 2009

Exhibiting and attending at trade shows is a great way to reach prospects. These events allow for face-to-face interaction, product introductions, competition evaluation, and media attention.

Trade shows keep many companies up to date on the trends and technologies within their industry, creating a competitve advantage. Also, this gives professionals a venue to collaborate and discuss common questions about production, engineering, marketing, etc.

Trade shows are also a great time and budget saver for the Sales & Marketing Department by being able to interact with a large number of vendors in your company's industry at one time and place.

Overall, these trade shows and conferences are another way a company can increase their knowledge and experience within an industry by being invloved.
